Horror Research - Subgenre

The subgenre of horror I am researching is Psychological horror, through my research I have found out this type of horror focuses on character fears and beliefs. They also use sound effects and eerie music to create tension and emotional instability. Psychological horror is the opposite to splatter horror genre as it does not use as much blood and gore but tends to take a more natural approach to the movies with using normal human beings instead of monstrous characters. This subgenre targets the audience’s mentality and tries to play with their heads rather than using graphic imagery. Examples of psychological horror are “the others”, “the sixth sense”. They are more realistic as the events that occur in the film can happen in real life which makes it scarier. It tries to expose evil that hides behind normality and draws in audiences as it can seem so real. Due to it feeling so real it often has an effect on the audience after it has been watched as people still think about it which is another aspect the frightens people, Suspicion is built up through the film and the twist or killer is revealed at the end, so through the film audiences become involved as they in a way are trying to solve a mystery.
