Filming update

FIRST ATTEMPT

First attempt at filming: With our original idea being based on the earlier treatment we have posted about a young Asian school girl getting trapped in a school after making numerous phone calls trying to get hold of parents to inform them of her whereabouts. She would then see blood dripping and hands strangling her.

So when we booked the camera’s lights and room to film in we tried to start our filming but the only light available at that particular time were spotlights/ small light which were not very useful,as when we tried to film the area was too dark and we literally couldn’t see anything through the camera.
With our actress having a different timetable to our group it was hard to arrange times when we could all meet up and do some filming. So when we tried to re-book the equipment which was on a convenient day for our actress we were told it was fully booked for the following three weeks. With us being set on an Asian actress we decided that we would wait and in the mean time get on with other work such as sketches and audience research.

CHANGE IN ACTRESS
When the three weeks had passed and we had arranged to film our actress wasn’t available as she was also a media student who had to do filming with her own group at the exact same time, so as a last minute idea we had to change the actress, so we needed an actress at last minute so I decided to do it which saved time in finding somebody else. Another group member (Yesside) would also feature in the trailer as the killer. This meant that the other two members (Olaide and Beverley) had the job of filming and lighting as well as adding make up effects. So although it was easier to use group members as we didn’t have to depend on other people, it was also harder as we all had more than one job to do as although I was acting I was also making sure that the props were in the frame of the shot, and the other girls in the group were making sure that the lighting was good with no shadows and that the make-up was effective.

When we filmed part of the trailer and watched it back we realised that a few minor mistakes were used such as the lights being in the shot and the framing of a few shots being not quite right for example in on shot as I turned my head my nose was cut out. When we had a group discussion we came to the conclusion that our idea was too complex and not suitable for a horror genre as we needed to make it gorier. It would have also been hard for us to have been consistent as we used many props including piles of books and stationary to make it look as the girl was trapped so it would have been hard for us to make sure that when we filmed again we got the props in the exact same position as the previous shots.

NEW IDEA

When we filmed part of the trailer and watched it back we realised that a few minor mistakes were used such as the lights being in the shot and the framing of a few shots being not quite right for example in on shot as I turned my head my nose was cut out. When we had a group discussion we came to the conclusion that our idea was too complex and not suitable for a horror genre as we needed to make it gorier. It would have also been hard for us to have been consistent as we used many props including piles of books and stationary to make it look as the girl was trapped so it would have been hard for us to make sure that when we filmed again we got the props in the exact same position as the previous shots.

With watching the footage we were not happy with that or the storyboard so we decided to change the idea completely to a simpler idea with a lot more blood and effects for it to fit the genre. This also meant that we could film during lesson time as we decided to keep the acting with in the group instead of relying on outsider to come and act when it was convenient for them. So the following lesson we started filming, we drew up a rough storyboard and idea of bullet points which we wanted to include in our filming and trailer. We brought in props including pyjama bottoms, teddy bears, and bed sheets and also simple make up including red lipstick and black mascara as we wanted a natural effect that looked realistic but at the same time scary.

So we started filming which was a lot easier as we had a simpler idea and with only one actress this time it meant an extra pair of hands in the group to hold lights, arrange props and direct the trailer. We decided to base our trailer on crazy women and therefore covered the clothing that the actress was wearing in fake blood and also covered the teddy bear to make it look as if she had gone crazy. We decided to keep it in one setting and used simple make up as this was easier but also looked more realistic. The smudged black mascara under the eyes and red lipstick smeared across the face made it look as if this woman had been crying or got angry and attacked her own face. We decided not to use any audio as we want to add our instrumentals to the trailer and we also want to make it sharp and snappy so we thought that any speech from the character would stop us from making it snappy as the audience will concentrate on what she is saying rather than what she is doing.

UPDATE

We feel as if we have made more progression using this idea and we have been able to film more as we could get as much done as we could during lesson time, but we have also had to book the equipment out of lesson time as some of it takes a while to set up which wastes filming time. We want this trailer to be creepy and snappy so when filming we decided to test out different shots and different idea’s to help us when it came to editing as then we would have a wide range of footage to chose from. In our group we decided to each try different roles from filming for example I would be lighting during one session and filming during another, this allowed me and the rest of my group to learn new skills. One new thing I learnt with the camera ‘cannon EOS 7D’ was how to get one subject of the shot in focus and another out of focus which creates a very good effect as we concentrate on one thing more than the other but still have the other in sight. So in the past few weeks we have made a progression with filming but now we just need to shoot an ending shot to the trailer which will be done this week. We are currently in the process of editing the footage we have using final cut pro and the group are glad that we have changed our original idea as it seems to be paying off.
