Textual Analysis of a ‘Movie Magazine Front Cover’: Sweeny Todd- Entertainment Weekly Magazine

“Entertainment weekly is an American magazine, published by the Time division of Time Warner, that covers film, television, music, broadway theatre, books and popular culture”

Entertainment weekly’s concentration is on entertainment media news and critical review.

The denotation of the magazine is a full length colour picture of Johnny Depp’s character 'Sweeny Todd' the 2007 remake of  the film 'Sweeny Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street', co written by John Logan and Stephen Soudheim and directed by Tim Burton.

The asymmetrical picture of Sweeny Todd is the main image on the magazine cover, here is a close up of 'Sweeny Todd' staring at the camera at an eye level, this connotes that 'Sweeny Todd' is staring at his next victim which can be any reader of the magazine, his priecing stare ingages the audience to want to know the reason behind his angry stare.

The name of the magazine is ‘Entertainment Weekly’, the font style is similar to ‘Sana Serif font’ this connotes a more modern feel to the magazine the font style is used often around the cover, the only other font style is in italic and in a smaller font size, allowing the key selling points in the magazine to stand out and be eye catching.

The Masthead is a light blue this connotes and as also supports the chilling mood given by the character Sweeny Todd in this magazine cover the Masthead is in front of the main image which is not normally positioned in most movie magazine covers, who are more likely to place the Masthead behind however the positiong of the masthead denotes that the character Sweeny Todd is hiding a secret that reveals a much darker side then what is precieved in the image. Inside the last four letters of Entertainment ‘m,e,n,t’  the other word in the Masthead (Weekly) was creatively placed inside the larger font size, the colour is black in order to be visible from its blue background. This feature makes “Entertainment Weekly” stand out from their competitors in the media sector e.g ‘Empire’.

Above the masthead is the date line in a very much smaller font size, in white it’s placed in a suttle manner at the upper right hand corner of the page it denotes the issue number (#963) month (November 9th) and the year (2007) even though the magazine is entitled 'Entertainment Weekly' the magazine is distributed monthly.
This cover was released in November a month before the film release date (23 December 2007) this was a device to build momentum around the release of the film.

The main cover article is ‘Holiday Movie Preview’ the inside scoop 39 New films,a short, '39' has a larger font size and coloured in blue putting emphasis on the amount there fore allowing the audience to have a sneek peak at the movies that are to be released, this is a unique selling point links back to the main image of Sweeny Todd and dennotes there is much more enjoyable findings when reading the magazine.

The other coverlines on the magazine is 'strarring, Johnny Depp in Sweeney Todd' a short, sharp description of the magazines main selling point is a great use of a selling line, what I noticed in this cover was the layout of the words the actors name was put first before the movie and in larger font this connotes that the actor Johnny Depp is a major movie star and with his star power will bring in many fans of his work, this technique was used by the producers of the movie Sweeny Todd as well as Entertainment Weekly.

Underneath this can be found is the 'Pluses' in the magazine the other contents in the magazine besides from the main attraction it reads information on stars e.g. Angelina Jolie,Will Smith and Keira Knightley. In a blue font the same tone as the other texts in the magazine, the words that are not actors/actresses names are coloured in red inorder to stand out.
