Textual Analysis- Movie Poster -Yeside Kelechi Beyioku

This movie poster is for ‘Grace’, released in 2009 it was directed and written by Paul Solet . The production companies for the film are ArieScope Pictures, Dark Eye Entertainment and Leomax Entertainment. Acting as the mother of baby Grace is Jordon ladd playing Madeline Matheson , Father  is Stephen Park playing Michael Matheson and Grandmother to Grace is Vivian Matheson played by Gabrielle Rose.

Grace Madeline Matheson is eight months pregnant and determined to deliver her unborn child, Grace. However an accident leaves baby Grace dead inside her, none the less Madeline insists on carrying the baby’s corpse to term. Weeks later, when Madeline delivers, the baby miraculously returns to life.

In the movie poster for ‘Grace’ the lighting is high key lighting with shadowing around the edges of the poster, the setting is in a grey room, the lighting allows the baby bottle to be the focal point of the poster, the colour scheme of the poster is filled with two tones on grey, as well as black and a deep red these intense colours give an ery mood to the poster there for following conventions of a horror movie. The poster being grey can symbolize a variety of effects such as decay (body deposits), the mourning of the dead or the connection between evil, the fly and good baby Grace, the deep red connotes pain from Grace who is the baby drinking from the bottle, which suggests she is dying due to a lack of blood, the blood follows the convention of a horror movie poster, incorporating blood in some way.

The two tones of grey evoke a sense of anxiety, the audience then perceive the movie to have a complex plot on the basis of a story that displays a number of different characters involved in the tragic affair. On the top of the blood filled bottle denotes a  flesh fly, know as a filthy creature found in the most unhygienic of places the positioning of the fly connotes that the fly is dominant, meaning that Grace is vulnerable, a victim of her own sickness which the flesh fly is making more painful.

The main prop used in the poster is a baby bottle which is almost empty of its contents of blood, there are connotations of Grace already suffering a great deal of pain seeing how her mother will not free her from this pain her mother, Madeline is determined to keep Grace alive by any means. which explains the feeding of blood, going to extreme lengths the main image is done photographically along with adjustments to create a stronger shadow for the bottle, it is depicted on a large scale in the center of the poster, by placing the bottle in middle of a grey canvas creates a sense of loneliness representing the role of the mother who isolates herself off from the her husband, family and Doctors who have advised her to leave Grace to be taken care of by professionals.

The camera angle used in the poster is Eye level, facing the audience straight on giving them the opportunity to take in all of the components that make the poster appealing, the Eye level shot is positioned as if the audience are observing the scene, the shock of seeing a babies bottle filled with blood raises enigmas such as where the blood came from or is it the babies blood.

The shot size in the movie poster is a long shot of the bottle, the focus of the poster is Harsh showing the detail of blood dripping inside the bottle, the wet shine from the tip of the bottle, Denotes that Grace has been drinking blood and because it is wet it conveys  consumption not to long ago.

The type of font used is Serif font where the design consists of ‘flick ups’ which connote a traditional/old fashioned look which links to the relationships of the three generations depicted in the movie. Grace’s grandmother trying show tough love by advising Madeline to give up Grace for professional help, then there is Madeline second generation, the mother who refuses to let go of her child. Lastly Grace the vulnerable third generation of the Matheson’s family. The old fashion style connotes that Graces illness is some sort of curse within the family.

The Anchorage in the poster is ‘Love. Undying’ this helps as a clue of the context of the image, the love connotes Madeline’s undying love for her baby Grace especially when she thought she was dead made her more determined to not lose her baby again, the Undying connotes Madeline desperatcy to not let Grace die, Grace is the Undying to Madeline’s Love. The audience because of the statement ‘Love.Undying’ perceive the movie to be a dark and twisted love story between mother and child.

The origin of the film Grace (2009) is a remake of the 2006 ‘Grace’; the short movie was used to obtain funding for the feature version. Analysising the poster I noticed that the names of the cast were positioned at the bottom of the poster in a smaller font size, by doing so the movie is selling something other than the cast/star power, this suggests that in the low budget movie ‘Grace’ the aim of writer Paul Solet was for audiences to focus on the story.

In regards to credits the poster was released later in the campaign for the 2009 remake of ‘Grace’ which is now more explicit then it would have been in 2006 and there are more revealing details about the plot.
In conclusion I believe that ‘Grace’ the movie poster has accomplished its main target of reaching out to previous fans of the 2006 version of Grace and gaining new audiences as well. They achieved this by stratergising the plot how they display the distress of a baby without offending audiences, instead a babies bottle was used to represent what would have been a baby. However a slight improvement could have been made by adding critics comments would have helped with the promotion of the film and another form of persuasion for audiences.
