Textual Analysis - Magazine - Beverley

Masthead which is also known as the title stands out since the font in bold and Red. The masthead is in capital letters which shows that it is very important and needs to be read. The masthead is red whereas the background of the magazine is white so the masthead is very clear and can not be missed. The masthead is very important since it promotes the magazine as whole and gives it a reputation. This is also represented to the audience under the E and M of the masthead.

This shows the potential buyers of the magazine that it is rated as a good magazine which would attract more people to buy the magazine. This would be one of Empire Magazine’s unique selling points. This would also be the magazine selling line.

The issue date and price of the magazine was placed above the M this is different to the layout of a majority of magazines since the date and price are normally placed around the bar code.
The main image is of Megan Fox. Megan fox is a huge American actress an idol to may film watchers so Megan Fox being the main focus of the magazine would appeal to many people. Megan Fox is posed informally; she is topless, hair down bouncy hair and could be seen as attractive.
Empire contains a lot of different cover lines. The main cover line is based on Megan fox which lets the audience know that inside the magazine.
There are 3 different pictures of actors at the bottom of the page with information about films in which they have starred in. This may also show the audience what else the magazine includes. The images are of men would could attract females since the Main image of Megan Fox would attract a lot of men.



The mis-en-scene on the front cover being analysed includes the font, colours used and the layout. The four colours used are red, blue, black and grey with a white background. These are just normal plain colours which would show that the magazine isn’t targeted for children. The magazine front cover contains high key lighting. There are no props used in the main image. Megan fox non verbal communication shows through her facial expressions that she is very serious the fact the she has folded her arms and is topless may also be communicating to us that she is partly seductive.
Sans Serif fonts are used throughout the front cover. This is because the font ranges from different sizes. It isn’t the traditional English joint up font used. The fonts used ranges the main headlines are in grey caps lock whereas as the other cover lines are in a smaller black font. The image of Megan fox is a medium close up shot. This is because we are able to see her face and most features of her body clearly.

The bar code is placed on the middle of the right hand side of the magazine. This is different since in most cases the bar code is normally placed in the bottom right or left hand corner.
